What if the cat refuses to take medicine?

What should be noted when feeding medicine to cats? Firstly, it is necessary to establish trust with the cat. Only in this way can the cat confidently take the medicine. In addition, when the cat takes the medicine, it should also be given some small rewards, which can have a promoting effect.

Prescription and Precautions for Cat Medications
Usually, when prescribing medication, doctors will ask the owner if they want pills or potions. Potions can be injected into the mouth through eye drops bottles, while pills should be placed at the back of the tongue.

Injection solution matters
The medicine can be fed into the cat’s mouth through an eye drops bottle or a syringe without a needle. Generally speaking, a small dose of 0.5 milliliters can be injected at once, while a large dose needs to be injected in multiple doses. When feeding the medicine, there is no need to open the cat’s mouth. Just gently lift the cat’s chin and insert the syringe into its mouth corner to achieve the goal.

Precautions for pills
Tablets or capsules can sometimes be fed by grinding them into powder and mixing them into food. However, cats are very sensitive to odors, so the method of directly administering medication would be more effective.

The correct steps for feeding medicine to cats
(1) The owner first holds the pill with the thumb and index finger of their right hand, then slightly tilts the cat’s head at a 45 degree angle with their left hand. Using their index finger and thumb, they stimulate and pry open the cat’s lower jaw, preventing it from closing.
(2) Quickly insert the pill held by the thumb and index finger into the cat’s throat, the closer it is to the throat and tongue base, the better, so that the cat cannot bounce the pill out with its tongue.
(3) Quickly close the cat’s mouth with your hand and pinch it, so that it doesn’t have a chance to spit out or shake its head to throw out the pill. Don’t let go immediately, wait for a moment.
(4) While performing the third step, gently stroke the cat’s throat up and down with your right hand. Wait until you hear the cat swallow several times before letting go of the pill.
